In Luke 4:14, we learn that Jesus returned to Galilee filled with the power of the Holy Spirit, and news about Him spread. Acts 10:37-38 tells us that Jesus was anointed with the Holy Spirit and power and went about doing good and healing all kinds of diseases. Jesus’ miracles were performed through His divine power and the power of the Holy Spirit, emphasising the Holy Spirit’s involvement in Jesus’ ministry.
From Jesus’ conception to His baptism (Luke 1:35, Matthew 3:16-17, Mark 1:10-11, Luke 3:21-22, John 1:32-34), the Holy Spirit played a consistent role in his life and ministry. After his baptism, Jesus was led by the Holy Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil (Matthew 4:1, Luke 4:1). The Holy Spirit gave Jesus the power to overcome the devil’s temptation. After overcoming the temptations, Jesus returned to Galilee, went to the Synagogue, and read from the Book of Isaiah. There, He proclaimed, “The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the broken-hearted, proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour and the day of our God’s vengeance, and comfort all who mourn” (Luke 4:18 & Isaiah 61:1-2). The Holy Spirit empowered Jesus to perform miracles, preach the Good News, and fulfil His mission. This divine empowerment was not just a passive presence but an active power of the Holy Spirit that enabled Jesus to carry out His ministry.
